Maintaining your hardwood floors is a very simple process and when done properly, will provide you with years of service with beautiful floors. Vacuuming is the best way to remove dirt and dust from your floor; use a wand type vacuum for best results, or an upright with the beater bars turned off. A dust mop will help keep the dust down on a daily basis, but tends to leave behind the fine dirt particles. So, vacuum whenever possible.
Mopping is sometimes required, and a wide variety of commercial spray cleaners are available. Using a flat mop with a removable cloth that can be washed and reused makes cleaning very simple. When using a regular mop, vinegar and water (1 cup vinegar / 1 gallon water) is still the most widely recommended cleaning solution. Be sure not to use excessive water on the floor. Door mats and rugs placed in front of doors and high traffic areas will help remove dirt from shoes and prevent excessive wear spots, i.e. kitchen sink, refrigerator, etc. By following these simple steps, your floors should provide years of lasting beauty. |
